Client Overview
LifeLearn is a technology company in the animal health space, based in Guelph, Ontario. At the time of the video, it had been in business for 21 years, had moved into its Guelph facility three years earlier and had done two expansions since. Think Green Solutions installed its new LED lighting system two months before the video was filmed. In the project video below, CEO James Carroll, Marketing Manager Marcy Nagel, Senior Software Architect Jamie Klapwick and Graphic Designer Jennifer Boergers talk about the old lighting and what changed after the switch.
The Challenge
Before the upgrade, LifeLearn's office ran on T12 fluorescent lighting.
Old, Warmer Lights
Jennifer Boergers, Graphic Designer, calls the T12 fluorescents “the old warmer lights.”
Lamps Replaced Weekly
In some cases, the fluorescent lamps were being replaced weekly because they burned out or broke.
Hazardous Material
In CEO James Carroll's words, the old style fluorescent lighting “has hazardous material in it.”
Migraines and Sick Days
Some employees were out on sick days with migraines and other headaches. Under the old lights, Jennifer was “plowing through my sick days in a couple months.”

The Results
In CEO James Carroll's words, the upgrade had a positive impact on the P&L, the cash flow and employee productivity.
$877 in Monthly Savings
On-screen figures in the video put monthly lighting costs at $1,155 with the old T12 lighting and $278 with Think lighting, a saving of $877 every month.
Costs Down 72%
In the team's words, the lighting is cutting LifeLearn's cost down by 72%, and maintenance should be down to very, very little year over year.
Fewer Migraines, Sick Days to Spare
James is learning that employees who were out on sick days with migraines and other headaches now have none. Jennifer still has sick days left; by the same time the year before, she had used them all and was going into her vacation time.
Wider Colour, Brighter Light
Jamie Klapwick, Senior Software Architect, says the colour is a lot wider and the intensity of the light is a lot brighter.
Installed Overnight
For Marcy Nagel, Marketing Manager, the install seemed to happen overnight: “Went home one day, came back the next day, turned on the lights and noticed an immediate difference.”
Mercury Free
The new lighting is mercury free, so LifeLearn is no longer putting mercury into the landfills.

You know, we think about the P&L, we think about our cash flow and we think about employee productivity, and this had a positive impact on all those areas. But in addition to it, you know, we want to be a responsible organization. So when we have old style fluorescent lighting that has hazardous material in it, that we're replacing weekly in some cases because they burn out or break or whatever the case might be, now I actually, I can sleep a little bit better knowing that I'm not putting mercury into the landfills, and we've got a proper lighting system that's modern, better quality of lighting, better experience for the employees, but we're not poisoning the environment at the same time.
