Würth Canada LED Retrofit Case Study

An LED Lighting Upgrade for Würth Canada's Offices and Warehouse.

Think Green Solutions converted Würth Canada's Ontario offices and warehouse to LED, beating the quoted energy savings at 17,491 kWh saved a month.

  • Client Overview

Würth Canada's facility in Ontario combines offices and a warehouse. Think Green Solutions converted the building's lighting to LED. In the project video below, four members of the Würth team talk about the upgrade and what it changed: Tim Louter (Facilities), Fiona Fazzari (Accounts Receivable), Derek Batchelor (Inventory Control) and Austin Wilkinson (Special Orders).

The Challenge

When Tim Louter of Würth's facilities team first walked into the building, he was surprised that such a new building wasn't LED. Converting it was one of the first things he pushed for.

The lighting that came with the building had real problems. The front office was rather dark at the desks, with light readings at some desks below where they should be, and the space looked yellow and gloomy at night. The fixtures weren't sealed units, so bugs collected inside them, died and fell onto desks on a daily basis, and the fixtures had to be cleaned out twice a year.

Why Würth Upgraded

For the offices, the goal was to brighten the space and get a higher Kelvin: light with a feel closer to sunlight. Energy was the other driver. As Tim puts it, “one of the reasons I wanted to complete this LED changeover project was the energy savings you can get.” With the new lighting, he says, Würth was able to cut its energy costs in half and still get a brighter light than it had before.

Think Green Solutions converted the building to LED, from the front offices to the warehouse aisles shown in the project video.

The Results

The upgrade beat its energy target. Think Green quoted savings of 16,736 kWh a month. Würth's monthly electricity use from August 2018 to August 2021, shown at the end of the project video, puts the minimum proven savings at 17,491 kWh a month, equivalent to $2,798.56 a month at $0.16 per kWh.

  • Night and Day

“The difference in the new lighting compared to the old one, it was night and day,” says Derek Batchelor, Inventory Control.

  • Like the Building Was in HD

In the video, the Würth team says it was like the warehouse and office building was “in HD.” The new lighting created uniformity in the light and reduced eye glare and shadowing throughout the entire warehouse.

  • No More Headaches

Fiona Fazzari, Accounts Receivable, used to go home with a pressure headache every day. Within a week of the new lighting, her head was clearer and she wasn't squinting. “I used to buy a bottle of Advil a month, and I haven't bought one in over a year.”

  • No More Bugs in the Fixtures

With the new lights, there is no more fly build-up and no more taking the lights apart just to clean them out. As Tim puts it, “we're getting that great light out of them as well.”

  • A More Comfortable Workspace

Austin Wilkinson, Special Orders, sits at his desk for most of the day. He describes the new light as crisper and more natural feeling, says his workspace is more enjoyable, and feels he could work longer periods.

A Significant Increase in Lighting

Client Testimonial

If I was building a building, I would definitely personally go with the Think lights over the builder grade lights, because it's a significant increase in lighting.
