Elora Home Hardware LED Retrofit Case Study

An LED Lighting Upgrade at Home Hardware Elora in Elora, Ontario.

Think Green Solutions upgraded Home Hardware Elora in Elora, Ontario, to LED lighting, saving the store $408 a month with a three-year payback.

  • Client Overview

Patty Smith owns Home Hardware Elora in Elora, Ontario. The store is about 7,300 square feet, in a building it rents. When Think Green Solutions came to her with an LED lighting program, she took a look, and she calls the upgrade “probably the best thing that I've done in 2015.” In the project video below, Patty and paint expert Jen McKeen talk about the old lighting, why the store chose Think Green and what changed after the switch.

The Challenge

Before the upgrade, Home Hardware Elora ran on T8 fixtures.

  • Outrageous Hydro Bills

Patty couldn't stand looking at the store's hydro bills. In her words, they were “outrageous.”

  • A Greener Store

She also wanted the store to be a little more green and a little more conscious of the environment.

  • Dim Aisles

The plumbing and electrical aisles were dim, which made some of the tags hard to read.

  • Paint Chips Taken Outside

In the paint department, customers had to take paint chips outside to see the undertone.

Why Home Hardware Elora Chose Think Green

The store looked at a few different companies before converting to LED and chose Think Green because it was confident in the product.

  • A Warranty That Meant a Lot

Patty says Think Green's “five year no question asked warranty” meant a lot to her.

  • No Purple Bulbs

She had seen other LED conversions where the bulbs turned different colours, even purple. “Why would you invest this much money on a product you didn't believe in?”

  • Think Bulbs on the Shelf

She believes in Think Green to the point that she brought some of its bulbs into the store to sell right off the floor.

The Results

“It was ridiculous before. We didn't know how dull our store was.”

  • $408 in Monthly Savings

On-screen figures in the video put the store's monthly lighting costs at $716 with the T8 fixtures and $308 with Think lighting, a saving of $408 every month.

  • A Three-Year Payback

Patty says the project has three years to pay for itself. “When you look at those numbers it seemed crazy not to do this project.”

  • The Whole Store Lit Up

Before the switch, the store was so dull that “nothing shone.” When the LEDs went in, “the whole store lit up.”

  • No More Dark Spots

The dim plumbing and electrical aisles are gone, and so are the dark spots in the store. Staff are excited that they can read the tags more easily.

  • Truer Paint Undertones

Jen McKeen, Paint Expert, says customers no longer have to take paint chips outside to see the undertone. Under the old lighting, customers would often see green in a chip that they now see is grey, and it's a lot easier to tell.

The Impact Was Immediate

Client Testimonial

I would recommend this to other dealers, definitely. If I had a second store, I would be doing it right away. The impact on the store was immediate.
