Bayshore Community Centre LED Retrofit Case Study
An LED Lighting Upgrade at the Home of the OHL's Owen Sound Attack.
Think Green Solutions upgraded Owen Sound's Bayshore Community Centre from metal halide to LED, saving $54,000 a year with a payback under two years.

Client Overview
The Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound, Ontario, opened in 1983. It is home to the Owen Sound Attack of the OHL, as well as minor hockey, girls' hockey and, in the summertime, lacrosse. Think Green Solutions replaced the arena's lighting with LED. In the project video below, Ryan Gowan, Manager of Arena Operations for the City of Owen Sound, Greg Hoddinott, Manager of Marketing and Communications, and players and coaching staff from the Owen Sound Attack talk about the upgrade and what it changed.

The Challenge
The arena ran on old metal halide lighting that required a lot of maintenance and gave off a lot of heat. In the two years before the upgrade, the arena spent a lot of money on new bulbs and on bringing in lifts to change the lighting over the rink.
The light itself was a problem too. There was a lot of shadowing on the ice, and the building came across as cavernous, especially on TV. During OHL broadcasts, Bayshore's highlights always looked more yellow and darker, while other arenas looked whiter and brighter.

Why Bayshore Chose Think Green Solutions
The arena team reached out to another arena that had faced similar issues, then did walkthroughs with several companies that specialize in LED lighting. Think Green Solutions won the job. As Ryan Gowan puts it, “they gave a really professional presentation. Their history of other projects really led to us selecting them as the contractor for this job.”
During the installation, Think Green kept disruption to the facility and its rentals to a minimum and worked around the arena's schedule.
Results
The upgrade paid off in two ways: lower energy and maintenance costs, and a brighter, clearer arena for players, coaches, fans and sponsors.
66% Energy Savings
The LED upgrade delivered energy savings of 66%.
$54,000 a Year in Savings
Savings of $4,500 a month, which is $54,000 a year in energy savings and maintenance.
Payback Under Two Years
The payback is under two years, based on the lighting the arena replaced.
317,707 lb of CO2 Offset
The LED upgrade offsets 317,707 lb of CO2.
Every Inch of the Ice
Players, coaches and fans can now see every inch of the ice surface. From a safety standpoint, more light makes it easier to see.
Logos and Signage That Pop
Sponsor logos now pop off the ice, and the signage in the building stands out more.
Better Sight to the Puck
For goalie Nick Chenard, the lighting gives a better sight to the puck. In his words, it's "just a lot nicer playing."

Professional From the Start
Client Testimonial
I would definitely recommend Think Green Solutions to anybody who's looking to upgrade their lighting. They were professional from the start, the planning, the lighting layout, right up until the end, and we really appreciated that.
