Longo's Winston Churchill LED Retrofit Case Study

An LED Lighting Upgrade at Longo's Winston Churchill Grocery Store in Ontario.

Think Green Solutions upgraded Longo's Winston Churchill in Ontario to LED lighting, giving the grocery store brighter departments and more customers.

  • Client Overview

Think Green Solutions replaced the lighting fixtures at Longo's Winston Churchill, a Longo's grocery store in Ontario, with new LED fixtures, from the grocery aisles to the produce, bakery, meat and seafood departments. In the project video below, Sam from the produce department, Jackie from the bakery, Roger from seafood and deli, and Julianna, a customer of 13 years, talk about the old lighting and what changed after the switch.

The Challenge

In the bakery, Jackie says the lighting the store did have was “definitely not as bright” as what it has now.

At the back of the store, the seafood and deli area was “pretty dark and dingy.” Roger describes it as a dark corner that was easy for customers to walk by when the fish wasn't lit up.

Lighting That Brings Customers In

Since the new lighting went in, Roger says more customers are coming to the seafood and deli counter: “that's without a doubt, that's a fact.” He notes the store also saw an influx of customers when it changed ownership, but because the department is now more brightly lit, customers actually notice it. “Because we have more visibility due to the lighting, we get more flow.”

For a department where seafood “already has a stigma,” the lighting “really picks up and gives it more of a Bloomingdale's effect,” and customers can see the quality of the fish.

Results

Before and after shots from the video show the same aisles under the previous lighting fixtures and under the new LED fixtures. In Jackie's words, the new lighting is “a hundred percent better than what we had prior.”

  • A Hundred Percent Better

Jackie, who has worked in the bakery for 12 years, says the new lighting is “a hundred percent better” than what the store had before. It's brighter and makes the workspace and the departments more visible. “I find I'm not moving away to get more light.”

  • More Customers at the Seafood Counter

Roger says more customers are coming to the seafood and deli counter since the lighting went in, because the department no longer sits in a dark corner that's easy to walk by.

  • Produce Quality You Can See

In the produce department, staff can see more bruising on apples and oranges and take that fruit off the display. It's a different colour that, in the team's words, “I myself over 30 years have not been seeing.”

  • A Cleaner Store

The new light is so bright that staff can keep the store a lot cleaner, “because we can see everything now.”

  • A Better Shopping Experience

Julianna, a customer of 13 years, noticed the difference. “My shopping experience is better because I can see everything much more clearly.”

  • A Cooler That Was Never This Bright

In the back cooler, the new lighting means you can read the signs on boxes maybe 25 feet away.

The Best I've Ever Seen

Client Testimonial

I've been in the business for over 34 years and this lighting is the best I've ever seen. For me, this is a natural light. It's almost like the store is just built of windows. It's a perfect lighting.
